StatisticsAt the turn of 20th and 21st centuries, the age of information began. The computational power and the storage capacity of computers as well as the data transmission speed increase steadily. All these technologies are tightly coupled with the capabilities to store and process data. The need for intelligent ways of information extraction grows as the amount of data increases. As the parallel process the statistics and data analysis techniques developed. Both these processes were independent. Without the statistics it is impossible to fully understand information hidden in the data. On the other hand, the progress in computer science allowed for translating statistical problems into computer language which in turn allowed for solving problems beyond the computational capabilities of human. As a result of computer science and statistics development statistics became a part of various disciplines. In many areas of professional life we gather data in digital form that without the statistical processing appear to be meaningless chaos. Statistics gives us the right perspective when looking at the data and allows for extraction of information relevant to the problems that we want to solve. The aim of this section is to familiarize the reader with essential statistical concepts that will allow them to use statistical tools and to assess the results.
